Pounamu

What is Pounamu?

Pounamu is the Māori name for New Zealand greenstone, a precious stone found mainly in the South Island of Aotearoa, traditionally known as Te Waipounamu. The name means “The Waters of Greenstone,” reflecting the deep connection between the land and this treasured stone.

New Zealand Pounamu is formed naturally over millions of years and is prized for its strength, durability, and rich green tones and more. For Māori, Pounamu is a Taonga (a sacred treasure). Historically, it was carved into tools, weapons, and meaningful adornments, many of which were passed down through generations.

Today, Pounamu jewellery — including Toki, Hei Tiki, Manaia, and Pikorua represents strength, protection, unity, and connection. It is traditionally gifted to carry love, intention, and mana between people.

When you wear New Zealand greenstone, you are wearing more than jewellery — you are wearing a piece of Aotearoa’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
