How Is Pounamu Formed? | Authentic NZ Greenstone

Pounamu, also known as New Zealand greenstone or NZ jade, is formed deep within the earth under extreme heat and pressure over millions of years. Most Pounamu is nephrite jade, created when minerals are compressed and transformed along tectonic plate boundaries.

In Aotearoa, this process occurred as the Pacific and Australian plates shifted, forming the mountains of the South Island, traditionally known as Te Waipounamu. Over time, erosion carried pieces of Pounamu into rivers, where they were naturally smoothed by water.

This intense geological formation gives authentic New Zealand Pounamu its exceptional strength and durability. Its dense, interlocking crystal structure makes it tougher than many other stones — one reason it was historically used for tools and weapons.

From deep within the earth to handcrafted jewellery, every piece of authentic NZ greenstone carries the story of Aotearoa’s natural power and heritage.
