Types of New Zealand Pounamu

Every piece of Pounamu is unique, with its own colour, patterns, and character. While no two stones are exactly the same, Pounamu is commonly recognised in several well-known varieties.

Kawakawa Pounamu

Kawakawa is one of the most recognised and widely used types of Pounamu. It is known for its rich green tones, often featuring darker markings or natural inclusions. Strong, durable, and full of character, Kawakawa is a favourite choice for traditional and contemporary carvings.

Kahurangi Pounamu

Kahurangi is a rare and highly prized variety of Pounamu. It is valued for its exceptional clarity and light green colouring. When held to the light, Kahurangi can display remarkable translucency, giving it a luminous appearance.

Inanga Pounamu

Named for its resemblance to the soft colours of native whitebait, Inanga Pounamu is typically pale green, grey-green, or creamy in tone. It has a gentle, elegant appearance and is often appreciated for its subtle beauty.

Tangiwai

Tangiwai is distinct from nephrite Pounamu but is traditionally recognised as part of the Pounamu family. It is often highly translucent, with olive-green to golden-green shades that can appear almost glass-like when polished.

Kokopu Pounamu

Kokopu Pounamu is recognised by its striking patterns and markings. The stone often features dark spots, flecks, or flowing variations that resemble the markings of New Zealand's native Kōkopu fish. Each piece is truly unique.

Totoweka Pounamu

Totoweka is a rare variety of Kawakawa Pounamu that contains reddish or rust-coloured markings. These distinctive natural features create beautiful contrasts within the stone and make each carving one of a kind.

Raukaraka Pounamu

Raukaraka displays warm golden, olive, and earthy green tones. Its colouring can range from soft honey shades to deeper greens, giving it a distinctive appearance that stands apart from other varieties.

Flower Jade

Flower Jade is admired for its natural patterns and colour variations. It often features a blend of greens, creams, golds, and darker tones, creating unique landscapes and markings within the stone.

A Natural Treasure

No matter the variety, every piece of genuine New Zealand Pounamu carries its own story. Formed over millions of years and shaped by nature, each carving is a unique taonga to be treasured for generations.
