Types of Greenstone
Kawakawa-
A rich green with different shades named after the Kawakawa leaf.
Most often used in carving jewellery.
Kahurangi-
A highly translucent, light green shade, free from dark spots and other
flaws. One of the rarest varieties, highly esteemed by the Māori.
Inanga-
A light grey-green colour. It can be translucent or quite opaque.
Tangiwai-
Translucent to transparent olive green to blueish green type of serpentine, also known as bowenite.
Totoweka-
A Kawakawa variety with specks of brown and red streaks
Auhunga-
A pale green opaque variety, given as the intermediate between Inanga and Kawakawa.
Kokopu-
Trout stone named after the dark brown, olive green and yellow markings found on the native freshwater trout.
Raukaraka-
A Kawakawa variety that is streaked with a shade of olive green.
Putiputi - Flower Jade-
Base colour is often a rich green it also has golden yellow, orange and cream colours.
Hapopo-
Deep forest green and distinctive mottled patterns.
Takiri- Douglas Creek
is a type of Serpentine varied colours featuring a mix of greens, blacks, whites and translucent sections
Serpentine-
A range of colours from greens to olive tones to yellow, brown and even red
Kahotea-
A type streaked with white.
Tahutahi-
Snowflake distinctive with white flecks across a deep green.
